description: "At the beginning of 'Monheimsallee' stands a bronze statue of the merchant and politician David Hansemann, which has commemorated one of the most influential liberals of the 19th century since 1888. Between avenues and street noise, the monument acts as a calm counterpoint. Hansemann advocated economic modernisation and civil participation, which brought him recognition far beyond Aachen. When you pass 'Hansemannplatz', the determined expression of the figure catches your eye, reminding you of a time when political ideas were often hard-won. This makes the square a place where history seems tangibly close."

David-Hansemann Monument Aachen: a reminder of a liberal reformer

At the beginning of 'Monheimsallee' stands a bronze statue of the merchant and politician David Hansemann, which has commemorated one of the most influential liberals of the 19th century since 1888. This makes the square a place where history seems tangibly close.
