The two sculptures refer to the legend of the creation of the Lousberg, according to which the Devil wanted to fill Aachen with sand. Devil and Market Woman Aachen: a local legend at the Lousberg

If you want to climb to the highest point in Aachen, you can't miss the Devil and the Market Woman. The two sculptures refer to the legend of the creation of the Lousberg, according to which the Devil wanted to fill Aachen with sand. After losing his thumb in the cathedral door due to a ruse by the people of Aachen, he wanted to take revenge on the inhabitants. However, the cunning market woman prevented this, and the sand spilled out of the devil's sack in front of the Aachen valley. This sand formed what is now Aachen's Lousberg.
