 The Johannisbach stream has been part of Aachen since ancient times. It once flowed openly through the city and shaped a marshy lowland area where monasteries were first established. Later, simple workers' houses were built there, and at times even a slaughterhouse. Between 1875 and 1908, the stream was moved underground to improve hygienic conditions.
