Lyrical scenes in three acts by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
After a sleepless night spent reading Pushkin's novel Eugene Onegin, the concept for Tchaikovsky's new opera was born: “I am looking for an intimate but powerful drama based on conflicts that I myself have experienced or witnessed, that can touch me deeply.” Tchaikovsky transforms the novel into a lyrical chamber play in which unbridled love, sharp rejection, and a deadly duel shake the emotional worlds of young people: the young Tatyana, immersed in her books, falls head over heels in love with the daring Onegin. In a passionate letter, she confesses her love to him. But he rejects her harshly, instead enjoying himself with her sister Olga and killing his good friend Lenski in a duel. After years of wandering, Onegin realizes his missed opportunity. Is there any going back?
In her first work at Theater Aachen, director Verena Stoiber explores this profound kaleidoscope of “real” people whose love is made impossible by missed opportunities, bad timing, and youthful recklessness with deadly consequences.
