Founded as a monastery church, the Kornelius provost church has experienced a number of exceptional circumstances in its more than thousand-year history. A dramatic event occurred in July 2021. After heavy rainfall, the River Inde burst its banks and on the night of 15 July 2021, the water peaked at over three meters. The church treasury in the church crypt was in danger of flooding. Shortly before the town was evacuated, firefighters and volunteers retrieved the objects from the treasury and stored them in the gallery. Fortunately, the textile relics stored in the church tower did not have to be brought to safety.
Once the water had receded, staff from the Aachen Cathedral Treasury collected the church treasures for safekeeping. While some works of art such as the bust of Cornelius or the Cornelius horn are now back "at home", around 40 other treasures - including gold and silversmith's work, small reliquaries, various altar crosses and medallions with reliefs of the apostles - are still in temporary storage in the cathedral treasury.
Under the title: "After the flood. The treasure of Kornelimünster as a guest", the exhibition shows a large part of the rescued works, which would have perished without the courageous efforts of the volunteers.
