Beyond the visible. The pictorial world of Michael Triegel

PDF

Exhibition
Exhibition at the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum
Michael Triegel (*1968, Erfurt) is one of the most important contemporary artists. Trained in the immediate environment of the New Leipzig School, he finds his role models in the Italian Renaissance and Mannerism, the Spanish Baroque and the Flemish masters of the late Middle Ages. His works stand between tradition and modernity: with self-confident aplomb, the artist adapts traditional pictorial formulas and subjects, the composition of which deliberately irritates and raises questions that he leaves to the viewer to answer.
In 2010, he gained international attention with the commission from the Regensburg diocese to paint a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI and most recently with the completion of a Cranach altarpiece in the Naumburg Cathedral Choir.
The Aachen exhibition presents the full range of Triegel's expressive diversity: from large-format works from the 1990s to his latest work, "Young Man from Procida" (2025), which combines medieval pictorial tradition, lived religious practice and contemporary portraiture.
An accompanying catalogue will be published by Hirmer Verlag.
