Young Else struggles—internally, with shameful resistance—against being forced to expose herself to Mr. von Dorsday, a wealthy art dealer who is only willing to pay the substantial sum she is asking of him to save her father from prison on this condition. In this conflict, torn between saving her father and not wanting to be humiliated as a prostitute, Else struggles to maintain her dignity—in her lustful imagination, even to the point of public exhibition. In her inner turmoil, her morally sharp and revealing view exposes the lies of a privileged society.
