The Vennbahn is the longest cross-border cycle path on a former railroad line. It runs for 125 km from Aachen through the Eifel, Belgium and Luxembourg.
The section from Monschau to Aachen is particularly suitable for a relaxed Sunday excursion, because for the most part it is simply a case of "let it roll"!
Take the Eifel cycle bus L66/85 from Aachen to Monschau-Kalterherberg and start your cycle tour there. The bike bus runs on Sundays and public holidays from Good Friday until the end of the NRW fall vacations. Information on the timetable on the AVV website >>
Between Monschau and Aachen, the Vennbahn crosses German and Belgian territory several times, a refreshing borderland hopping experience. There are also two sides to this enjoyable experience: a large part of the tour (approx. 38 km)
through the Emperor's wooded hunting grounds to Aachen is all downhill. "Let it roll!" is the motto here. Individual stops are just as enjoyable, for example at the Maassen coffee roastery or the mustard mill in Monschau (note: the Vennbahn does not run directly through the old town of Monschau. However, this worthwhile detour is signposted). When crossing the border, don't forget the legendary Belgian fries or the sweet rice cakes typical of the country.
