8th symphony concert
Anton Webern’s early work “Im Sommerwind” reveals a luminous orchestral idyll. Composed in 1904, it remains rooted in the traditions of Liszt, Wagner, and Strauss, unfolding a warm and narrative soundscape. Subtle nuances already hint at the sensitivity that would later shape his path into modernism.
Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 also began as a symphonic poem titled “Totenfeier”. It evolved into a monumental five-movement work exploring existential themes of death and resurrection. In the finale, choir, soloists, and large orchestra merge into a powerful and moving sonic vision.
An introduction by dramaturge Dr. Ulrich Wilker takes place 45 minutes before the concert.
