City of water - Urbs Aquensis
Whether it’s hot thermal springs or babbling brooks—Aachen has always been shaped by water, in so many ways! People settled near the hot mineral springs as far back as the Stone Age, long before the Romans built their impressive thermal baths here and came to appreciate the healing power of water. Today, it is not only the discoveries of large thermal bath complexes from this era that tell the story. Numerous underground streams—some of which have shifted to the surface—as well as magnificent fountains continue to bear witness to the great significance of water for the city.
