City of water - Urbs Aquensis

PDF

Guided tour/tour
Find out how Aachen established itself as a respected spa and bathing city.
Water has played an important role in Aachen's development in various ways. People settled near the hot mineral thermal springs as early as the Stone Age. Finds of large thermal bath complexes suggest that the Romans already appreciated the benefits of the healing waters. Numerous underground streams, some of which have been moved to the surface, and a large number of fountains bear witness to the great importance of water for the city, as do the thermal springs.

Find out what role the hot springs played in Charlemagne's decision to name Aachen his favorite palace and what influence the cold streams also had on the city, which not only established itself as a renowned spa and bathing city, but also as a stronghold of cloth production!
