Visitors driving into the centre of Aachen via the motorway from Cologne, Belgium or the Netherlands will pass through the Europaplatz, with the largest fountain in the city. The fountain is surrounded by the flags of the EU and its 28 member states.
The fountain itself was completed in 1958, and runs under the Wurm river. If the river flows too high, the water is pumped into the fountain. When the weather is too stormy, a small windmill transmits the wind force on to the technical system and the pump power in the fountain is reduced.
