Mundolph and Gundolph: two legendary bishops on a silent journey
In Klappergasse, you will encounter Mundolph and Gundolph, two figures deeply rooted in Aachen's mythology. The relief depicts the two bishops from Maastricht who, according to legend, wanted to set out once more after their death to attend the consecration of what would later become Aachen Cathedral. Their depiction appears quiet and mysterious at the same time, as if the path between the worlds were only a step away. At the convent of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus, the artwork reminds us how closely faith, storytelling traditions and urban space are connected. Klappergasse owes its name to this story, which still carries a faint echo of earlier notions of wandering legends.
