Saint Stephanus

Monument
In front of the Hungarian Chapel at Aachen Cathedral, there is a statue of the saint Stephen I.

The figure is therefore not that of Charlemagne the Great, as you might expect. The bronze sculpture, which was created in 1993 by the Hungarian artist Imre Varga, was a gift from Hungarian pilgrims and commemorates the Aachen holy pilgrimage, which takes place every seven years. In the Middle Ages and early modern period in particular, many pilgrims came from Hungary to Aachen to honour the shrines there. The Hungarian Chapel, in front of which the sculpture stands today, was built especially for them.
