Saint Stephanus
The bronze statue of 'Heiliger Stephanus' (Saint Stephen) stands quietly in front of the Hungarian Chapel, telling of a long tradition of pilgrimage. The figure was created in 1993 by Imre Varga and presented as a gift to Hungarian pilgrim groups. It commemorates the pilgrimage that has brought people from many regions to Aachen since the Middle Ages and still takes place every seven years. When you linger here, you can sense some of the devotion that has shaped this place over the centuries. The sculpture appears simple yet powerful, as if waiting for the next visitors to make their way through history.
