Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum

At the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, you’ll encounter works of art that make a special impression in a magnificent 19th-century city palace. The Cassalette House provides an elegant setting for a collection that spans from antiquity to the present day. Of particular note is the significant collection of medieval sculptures, which ranks among the most important of its kind in Germany. It is complemented by paintings from Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including works by Albrecht Bouts, Rembrandt, and Francisco de Zurbarán. Classical Modernism is represented by internationally renowned artists such as Alexej von Jawlensky, August Macke, and Max Slevogt. The paintings by Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Karl Otto Götz bridge the gap between Expressionism and the free, abstract use of color characteristic of the German avant-garde of the 1950s.
