Town hall
In the heart of the old town stands Aachen Town Hall, a building that impressively reflects the city's long history. In the 14th century, a Gothic building was erected on the foundations of the Carolingian Aula Regia, reflecting the growing pride of Aachen's citizens. Inside, the coronation hall is a reminder of the time when the coronation ceremonies of the Roman-German kings were held here. Portraits such as that of Charlemagne refer to Aachen's importance as a centre of power in past centuries. Despite severe damage during the Second World War, the town hall was rebuilt to its present form. Walking through the halls, you can feel the connection between medieval architecture and vibrant urban culture, which is still evident here today.
