Karlshofbrunnen
The Karlshofbrunnen fountain is somewhat hidden behind the market pharmacy and opens up like a small retreat in the middle of the old town. Its octagonal layout is reminiscent of the octagon of Aachen Cathedral and refers to the cultural significance of the city. Ottmar Hollmann designed the fountain in 1969 using marble, concrete and bronze. Reliefs on its sides depict the seven liberal arts, which played a special role in the time of Charlemagne. Especially in summer, when the courtyard fills with life, the fountain acts as a quiet counterpoint to the market square and invites visitors to linger for a moment in the shadow of history.
