Kristallnacht
For the Jews, the National Socialist period was a particular nightmare. One of the main historic events of this time was the “Reichspogromnacht”, or night of the pogroms, from 8 to 9 November 1938. In this night, the Aachen synagogue, among others, was desecrated and destroyed by fires set by the Nazis. 1,106 glass panels, each 19 millimetres thick and arranged to form a Star of David, are still reminiscent of the Kristallnacht today. Like the star, the new synagogue, and Judaism itself, will continue to exist unbowed in the future.
