Equestrian Statue of Kaiser Friedrich III Aachen – an imperial presence on Kaiserplatz
The equestrian statue of Emperor Frederick III, created in 1911, stands on Kaiserplatz. The statue was designed by Hugo Lederer and depicts the so-called 99-day emperor on horseback. Standing in front of it, you can sense something of the tension of this short, almost shadowy reign. The figure appears calm and determined at the same time. It was once surrounded by several lions, only one of which has survived and still stands on the square today. The bronze statue, which is around four and a half metres high, seems to be a silent observer of city life, reminiscent of a time when monuments carried political messages and redefined squares.
