The St. Nikolaus city church is a place of peace and calm in the middle of the hustle...
... and bustle of inner city life. Built in 1005 as a small chapel, the church was expanded in 1234, together with the growing Franciscan order, to become an impressive monastery. Built in honour of Saint Nikolaus and consecrated in 1327, a choir room, the three-tier altar and the side altars were built around the small chapel. Parts of the church were destroyed in a city fire in 1656, an earthquake in 1692 and bombing in 1944. The mission of the Franciscan order, to take in commercial traders and travellers and provide pastoral care to the population is continued today in the form of the “church for the city” association. Today, the city church is supported jointly by the Protestant and Catholic churches.
