Weather column
The Aachen weather column is one of the city's modern landmarks, combining technical finesse with a touch of nostalgia. Since the 1950s, it has been displaying the weather for the coming day with coloured neon tubes. The eleven-metre-high structure was developed based on a New York model and later mounted on an administrative building, bringing its total height to over forty metres. The column is particularly impressive after dark, when the sphere and shaft glow in different colours, silently forecasting the weather over the city. The weather column is not only an eye-catcher, but also an example of Aachen's enthusiasm for unusual technical ideas.
