Karlheinz Stockhausen's “Der kleine Harlekin” (The Little Harlequin) for solo clarinet brings not only music but also movement into play: the soloist embodies the character through dance and rhythm – even the stamping of feet becomes part of the composition.
Luciano Berio's “Opus Number Zoo – Children's play” surprises with a mixture of music and narration. Each member of the wind quintet takes turns slipping into the role of narrator, while the others set the stories to music. With this piece, Theater Aachen is also celebrating Berio's 100th birthday.
Maurice Ravel, whose 150th birthday is being celebrated this year, is also part of the program. His sonata for violin and piano, composed in the 1920s, is his last chamber music work and combines subtle wit and innovative timbres. The second movement is a “blues” – Ravel's very own interpretation of the then-new musical genre of jazz.
The chamber concert series is curated by Daniel Wenzel and Paul Tulloch from the Aachen Symphony Orchestra and promises a dazzling start to the series.
