Maria Stuart

Drama
Director Antigone Akgün stages Schiller’s royal drama for the first time on the Main Stage of Theater Aachen.
When Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, is suspected of murdering her husband, she seeks refuge in England with her distant relative, Queen Elizabeth I. However, her claim to the English throne makes her a threat to Elizabeth and her advisers. Imprisoned and charged with high treason, Mary faces execution. Schiller’s famous drama begins three days before her planned execution and focuses on the encounter between the two queens, who engage in a duel of intellect and emotion. Set between political power and human vulnerability, the play explores the possibility of responsible leadership. Director Antigone Akgün examines questions of female rule within a system shaped by men and the transformative effects of power. After her Aachen production of Our German Fairy Tale was invited to the renowned festival Radikal jung in Munich in 2025, she now directs her first production on the Main Stage.
