'Der fröhliche Hengst': a lively bronze sculpture at the 'Theaterplatz'
The bronze sculpture 'Der fröhliche Hengst' (The Happy Stallion) has stood on Aachen's 'Theaterplatz' since 1963 and commemorates the city's close connection to equestrian sports. It was created by sculptor Gerhard Marcks. The figure shows a horse in lively motion, as if it were enjoying a moment of freedom. Between city traffic and the theatre façade, the sculpture seems like a brief greeting to the CHIO, which attracts an international audience to Aachen every year. When you stand in front of it, you notice its playful expression, which lends the square a light, friendly touch.
