Elisenbrunnen
The Elisenbrunnen fountain is one of Aachen's most famous landmarks. Its classicist columned structure was designed by Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel and is a reminder of the city's long tradition of bathing. Behind the arcades, the typical scent of the warm springs, which were already in use in Roman times, still rises today. As you walk by, you can feel the connection between architecture and healing waters that characterises this place. Despite its destruction in the Second World War, the fountain was rebuilt in the 1950s true to the original. It still conveys the feeling of a historic spa resort in the middle of a modern cityscape.
